WKY-TV was Oklahoma City’s first TV station, owned by OPUBCO. The station began in 1949. It was the first independently owned TV station in the US to broadcast in color when on April 23, 1955 it broadcast the National Square Dance Festival. WKY-TV was also the first TV station in the nation to establish a professional meteorological department.
